“We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist, using technologies that haven't been invented, in order to solve problems, we don't even know are problems yet”
Richard Riley
Year 10 and 12 students attended an illuminating careers evening on Tuesday 6th of June. The auditorium welcomed 7 esteemed members of the school community: Kavitha Ganesan, Aaqib Gaffoor, Jayani De Silva, Vidhya Ganesan, Ayanthi Phillip, Dan Ameresekere, Roshanie Moraes and Hannah Wells.
Each guest represented a sector of industry different from the next and the students were given insight into their path to success. The panelists spoke candidly about university, career changes and the ever-growing vitality of young people to hone their soft skills. Attorneys at Law spoke of the value of sports while corporate executives discussed the essential need to experience a multitude of cultures.
Students were also allowed to ask any pressing questions they had, and the BSC students certainly did not let anyone off lightly.
“How do I fashion a lucrative and successful career in law?”
“Does attending Oxford really place you head and shoulders above the rest?”
“What are the hidden demands of being a school principal?”
The evening was extremely successful and all the students walked away with insight and a desire to learn more. In the coming year we plan to hold more “meet the professionals” sessions like this and hope to expand on the variety of careers we have in attendance.
Sincere thanks must be extended to the panelists for giving up their time. Once again the BSC community comes together to support and develop their young people.
