On Thursday 30th November 2023, 45 Year 9-Year 13 students went to the Overseas School of Colombo to watch their opening night of horror-comedy musical Little Shop of Horrors.
The cast, students of OSC, put on an excellent evening of entertainment. From hit numbers including ‘Skid row (Downtown)’, ‘Feed Me’ and ‘Suddenly, Seymour’, to an impressive three-tier traverse stage, immersing the audience into the action, the OSC production was full of talent and creativity. Little Shop of Horrors follows Seymour, a young man on ‘skid row’ working in a plant shop, who creates a new plant named ‘Audrey 2’. Impressive to look at, Audrey 2 brings in great business for the previously suffering plant shop, but comes with a problematic condition where it will only grow if given fresh blood… Despite it’s horror-based plot point, the show is littered with jokes, awkward but comical interactions and exaggerated characters, all of which the students of OSC delivered to a high standard.
A special mention must go to the set and props designers for this production. The scaffolding structure throughout the centre of the auditorium allowed the audience to be mere inches from the performers, and the addition of vines, plants and flowers twirled into and around the structure made the plant shop come to life before our very eyes. The plant itself was incredibly well designed and detailed, and was brought to life by one of the students with immense flair in a stand-out performance. Overall, our students were captivated.
All staff were incredibly proud of BSC students, who were amazing audience members, laughing along to the jokes and quirky characters, applauding the vocal talent of performers playing Seymour and Audrey, as well as the supporting ensemble, and respectfully observing the students work in between.
A big thank you to Rachel Jackson, theatre teacher at OSC and director of the production, for the personal invitation. We all thoroughly enjoyed our evening, and cannot wait to return the favour and invite you to our production of Daisy Pulls It Off in February!
