Personal enrichment comes in many different forms. Some children might wish to push themselves and develop their sporting skills, others may take a more artistic route, whereas some may wish to pursue a love of technology. At the British School of Colombo, we value everything the children achieve in school as well as the achievements that happen outside of school. We provide a broad range of Extra-Curricular Activities for our children although realise it can be difficult to cater for everybody!
Enrichment, and life beyond the school curriculum, provides the children with opportunities to extend their learning, improve or enhance skills, knowledge and wellbeing. It can also open children up to new opportunities and experiences. Children who embrace enrichment activities often enjoy themselves while honing and expanding their skillset. Life-skills are developed as they learn how to react to new situations and meeting new people. They tap into their existing knowledge and apply this to new encounters. The challenge of the new can build resilience and adaptability developing confidence in our learners.
In our first Key Stage 2 assembly, we celebrated the personal enrichment achievements of a selection of our children. They had been rewarded with trophies, medals and certificates for their successes and it was wonderful to see the delight on their faces as they shared these with those present.
Sanuk’s successes were recently acknowledged. He told us, “I go to a club to practise once a week and I felt good when I won a trophy.” Aavya, who shared her certificates and trophy in assembly, told us, “I have been learning the piano since I was 3 years old. I was excited and happy to receive my certificates.” Yuvan recently won the Nuwara Eliya U10s Open Championship, he says, “You have to practise golf a lot. I practise 5 days a week. I have to focus very hard to make sure my swing is correct.” Aadya is another success story, she also won a gold medal in a competition and said, “I had to work very hard and felt very proud of my achievement.” A huge well done to these children and all the children who take part in enrichment activities.
As families, it is important that we look to provide our children with the opportunities that will see them grow and flourish beyond their comfort zone. We want our children to be rounded and grounded, and we believe that providing children with a range of enrichment opportunities outside of school does just that.
