The British School in Colombo

UCAS at BSC

The British School in Colombo is an independent, co-educational international day school in the capital of Sri Lanka.  The medium of instruction is English. The British School is a fully accredited Cambridge International Examinations Centre.

Entry into the Sixth Form to study A Level is dependent on students gaining at least 5 IGCSE qualifications, having to obtain at least a B grade in subjects to be studied at A Level. In the Sixth Form students follow a linear 2-year course to prepare for A Level with the examination board Cambridge International Examinations.  Most students graduate from the British School having completed three or four CIE A Level Examinations.

In Year 12 the curriculum is augmented with an ‘Enrichment Programme’ which includes an independent project known as the ‘Senior Project’, which involves students making their own groups and pursuing a project of their own design.  In Year 12 there is the option of studying toward an AS in Global Perspectives.  All students are expected to maintain a healthy commitment to extra-curricular sporting, aesthetic, creative and community service endeavours.

The school Prefect system in Sri Lanka is highly respected and involves a strong commitment with regards to time and effort.  Students who have a proven record of responsibility and leadership are selected to fulfill this role.  Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects can be considered similar to a ‘Head Boy/Girl’ and ‘Deputy Head Boy/Girl’.  To be selected for this office, students must first be selected as Prefects, they can then apply in writing and are interviewed by the Senior Management Team for the role.

Previous students of the British School in Colombo have secured undergraduate entry into the world’s finest universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard.
