At BSC, the English Department has always aimed to create a language-rich environment and to encourage students to actively engage in their language development. English Week is, in some ways, a celebration of this language-rich environment we have cultured and has always been an eagerly anticipated couple of days in the BSC academic year; this year was no different. This year’s theme was ‘Greek Myths’ and the students eagerly participated in the activities and events planned for them.
English Week kicked off with a Senior School assembly and Key Stage 3 workshop conducted by Ashan Jayatilaka, author of ‘Knights of Olympus – Tristan’s Conquest’ and 2015 winner of ‘Best Novel – English’ at Sri Lanka’s State Literary Awards. Mr. Jayatilaka inspired a captivated audience with anecdotes of his own creative process and inspirations. During the workshops, Key Stage 3 were encouraged to plot their own narratives and share their ideas with the group – it was truly wonderful to see students thoroughly engaged throughout. A great success!
Throughout English Week, we held competitive interactive Key Stage book quizzes and a Display Board Decoration Competition during Form times. Students engaged in bookmark making, and short story writing in English lessons under the sub-theme of ‘Strength and Honour’.
We were also delighted to bring back the vibrant annual KS3 Poetry Slam, themed ‘Courage’ for this year, which saw wholesome and passionate performances from the students.
Booksellers were invited to school in an effort to encourage students to choose from and read a range of material that we hoped would promote a love for reading.
English Week ended with a much looked-forward-to Non-Uniform Day with students dressed up and taking part in an Inter-House Costume Parade to determine the best-dressed Gods and Goddesses. Students were asked to either donate a book or LKR300 if they were dressing up; these books and proceeds will help aid students from under-privileged schools who have little access to extensive reading material.
The English Department would like to express our gratitude to all who put in a lot of time and effort to make this week a successful one. We would also like to thank all students for wholeheartedly putting their best creative feet forward all week!
