Year 5 Study about Ancient Sri Lanka Civilization

Share
General Junior

Year 5 students have been enjoying their Humanities lessons based on Ancient Sri Lankan Civilisation and Locational Knowledge. They have really enjoyed delving into the lives of ancient Sri Lankans and learning about how Veddas survived in harsh environments. The children had the opportunity to build a bow and arrow and learn about the Vedda community, language, food, clothing, and shelter.

The locational knowledge unit allowed children to take a closer look at where the countries of the world are located, and some of the ways geographers describe locations. Children learnt to locate and describe places using longitude and latitude and find out about some of the important lines that delineate specific areas of the Earth - the Equator, the Hemispheres, the Poles and the Tropics. Finally, by looking more closely at the lines of longitude, children developed their understanding of time zones.
