The after-school Clubs and Societies began this Monday 16 January for our Senior School students and what a buzz it has been! We now have a large and varied ECA curriculum that adds the breadth and depth to the learning that takes place outside of the classroom and it has been wonderful to see our young learners engaged in the activities organised by the Teachers in Charge.
The activities offer opportunities for our students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community. Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering our students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context where these skills provide a well-rounded education. For example, in Chess this week students played a few games against each other to first allow themselves to self-assess their level of competency. This session also provided an opportunity for our newly appointed Coach to support d our beginners and stretch our advanced thinkers accordingly. We are keen to increase the level of challenge within the school community of chess players and progress thereafter to be involved in Inter-School Chess competitions in the future.
Research indicates that participation in extracurricular activities positively correlates with students’ development both academically and personally. Students who participate in ECAs have greater academic success, greater character development, especially in the areas of time-management and leadership skills, more positive social development, and greater interest in community involvement.
We currently have 81 ECA activities taking place during the week, and we strongly encourage all students to participate in our ECA programme as it offers the unique opportunity to make new friends, be a risk-taker, and share experiences whilst having fun. If your child is yet to sign up for an activity, please contact Ms. Celeste on [email protected]
We hope that all our students will enjoy their time after school!
