This week Year 3 have completed the CAT4 tests and Years 1 to 6 are gearing up to complete the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) in the next couple of weeks.
So why do we do these tests and what impact does it have on children’s learning?
CAT4 is the Cognitive Abilities Test (version 4) and allows pupils to demonstrate their ability in 4 different areas: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. The information collected from this test allows pupils, and their teachers, understand what their learning potential is and how they learn best. Teachers can then use this information to challenge children to meet (or exceed) their potential and adapt lessons in ways to meet individual learning styles.
The NGRT is an adaptive online reading assessment. It adjusts the questions based on the pupil’s previous response, ensuring that the test is accessible and challenging for all. We use this test to assess and monitor the crucial skill of reading as a way to quickly spot problems which could hold back pupil progress across the curriculum.
The impact of these tests is twofold:
• It enables teachers to have a greater picture of what your child is like as a learner and how to help them make greater progress by setting of individual targets.
• It enables your child to understand themselves better as a learner; thinking more closely about how they think and learn and what they need to do in order to make great progress.
The information from CAT4 is shared with you via the parent portal and information from the NGRT will be shared at the next Parent/Teacher conference.
