It may seem strange that in their first weeks in the Sixth Form, Year 12s are already being encouraged to think about and research what they might do when they leave the British School. However, their time in the Sixth Form will quickly pass, and it is essential that students plan their academic and career pathways as soon as possible, so that every opportunity is explored, and the best option is found and pursued. The intention is for all Year 12s to have a clear plan by April, so that they can begin their university applications before the summer holidays and complete these before Christmas next year.
On Tuesday a delegation of 9 universities from the UK came to the library to hold a university fair. This group included Birmingham, Durham, Kent, Leeds, Loughborough, Nottingham and Queen Mary University. This was followed by a delegation of 14 Australian universities on Wednesday, which included Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Western Australia, and UNSW – all members of the elite “Group of Eight” universities, as well as other esteemed institutions including RMIT and the University of Tasmania. Finally, on Thursday the university of Toledo from Ohio in the USA made a presentation to students during registration, giving them an idea of what is available in North America.
Whilst this may all seem overwhelming to some Year 12s, it is important to bear in mind that BSC students who graduated in June this year are now attending universities in 10 different countries – Australia, Canada, Holland, India, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the UAE, the UK, and the USA. The world is truly our oyster at BSC – but opportunities need to be researched if they are to be found, and that is what this week was all about.
