Antigone (18:30pm 28th and 29th March 2019)

General Senior

Antigone, tells the story of a 20-year old princess of Thebes. She is the daughter of Oedipus and the niece of the uncompromising ruler of Thebes, Creon. Antigone’s brothers, Polynices and Eteocles have killed each other in battle and Creon refuses to allow the body of Polynices to be buried. Instead he demands it be left to rot in the streets as a warning to those that might have thought about betraying him.

Not willing to allow her brother’s memory and body to go disrespected in this way, Antigone sets her stall out to bury him come what may. By flagrantly disregarding Creon’s orders she runs the risk of being put to death herself, regardless of her status and relationship to Creon.

The play Antigone asks us whether we should hold ourselves accountable to a higher order or should the decisions and consequences of our actions be dictated to us by the laws of man?

Antigone is an enduring tale that has been with us for over two and a half thousand years and has been continually re-written and re-imagined.

The students at BSC have been working tirelessly to stitch their version of Antigone into the tapestry of this tale’s history and are creating work that I am sure to be one of the defining threads in it’s make up.

You will see performances by students that any professional would be proud of. I have been inspired working with the cast and crew of Antigone and hope you can come to enjoy and celebrate their endeavours.

Antigone will be performed @ 18:30 on the 28th and 29th of March 2019 please fill out the order forms your children have been given or come down to the school to collect tickets from the uniform shop
