Junior School Maths Week 2019

General Junior

Last week was an exciting one in the junior school. We celebrated maths week 2019! The week was jam packed with lots of different challenges and maths based fun. Our main target for maths week this year was improving children’s ability to use mental maths strategies and to develop their problem solving.

We started the week with a KS2 inter house maths quiz where four children were selected from each house to represent their colours in the quiz with bonus points available for all children in the audience for answering questions correctly! There were many different rounds consisting of problem solving, mental maths strategies and the exciting quick-fire round. The children showed incredible maths capabilities during the quiz and answered their questions confidently and efficiently.

To add on more quality to maths week, 3D’s special maths assembly showed the importance of maths both now and in later life looking at future careers where they may need maths to be successful. 3D surely gave a brilliant end to the first day of maths week.

During the week, Children in KS2 were then given a maths challenge for the rest of the week. They had to design and create maths games in houses for their friends in other year groups. The children showed their incredible innovation skills whilst making their games as they came up with some fantastic ideas for maths games which involved high mental maths and problem-solving strategies.

While children in KS2 were busy creating their games, KS1 children were exchanging their knowledge in maths between year groups and were involved in playing many maths games within their houses. This was the very first time KS1 had joined KS2 for a house competition. It was truly an important week for the KS1 children.

On Thursday 14th and Friday 15th March the KS2 children took part in Games Fairs. All the children took turns at administering their games and then playing other children’s games. They were playing for magical house point tokens which were then added to the final house cup trophy. A huge congratulations to Centaur for winning the overall championship for maths week 2019!

The children loved taking part in maths week and they showed amazing enthusiasm and engagement throughout. The level of maths the children showed was exceptional as they used all the skills and methods which are being taught in everyday maths lessons. A big thank you to all the staff for creating a fantastic buzz around school and creating the environment for the children to have a memorable maths week 2019!
