General In the Spotlight

We have now completed our second set of GL assessments – Pupils Attitudes to Self and School (PASS) and the New Group Reading Test (NGRT).

PASS will help us build a complete picture of your child’s motivation, attitude and engagement in learning. Pupils were asked to respond to a series of statements about learning and school that fell into nine standardised factors proven to be significantly linked to educational goals:

1. Feelings about school

2. Perceived learning capability

3. Self-regard

4. Preparedness for learning

5. Attitudes to teachers

6. General work ethic

7. Confidence in learning

8. Attitudes to attendance

9. Response to curriculum demands

The electronic NGRT is an adaptive test for Years 3 to 6; meaning that the questions asked, and the passages given to read, are adapted depending on your child’s response. Children are therefore provided the right amount of challenge during the test which in turn keeps engagement high. Year 1 and 2 have sat a paper test in class. We will be able to examine the progress your child has made since the English progress test sat in September. We can identify where progress has been made and identify any gaps that remain. Intervention or challenge can then be tailored to your child’s specific reading needs.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to share individual reports or responses to PASS or NGRT with you, however, if your child’s class teacher has any concerns arising from the analysis of the class reports, they will contact you directly.

Your child’s class teacher will use the data from PASS and NGRT to add to the overall learning profile of your child. The teachers will continue to use this information to adapt lesson plans and delivery of the curriculum to meet your child’s specific needs and allow them a more personalised learning experience.

If you do have any questions about PASS or NGRT please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself.
