There are four after school activities currently in place under BSC Maths Circle. Vedic Mathematics is a brilliant approach to maths problems and has a growing interest around the world. It refers to some simple one-line step mathematical formula. It is a unique techniques of logical calculations based on some simple formulas where many problems can be solved mentally within few seconds. There are 14 students from Years 7 to 13 practising Vedic Maths every Tuesday from 2.45 to 3.45 pm. They started with finding square of any number without working out on paper using traditional method of multiplication or using Calculators. Students are able to calculate the square of any numbers between 1 to 100 or any number close to the powers of 10 (e.g. 1005 ,9999, 100006 or 999999 etc.) within few seconds mentally.
On Wednesdays from 2.45 pm to 3.45 pm students explore methods in solving Rubik’s Cube puzzles and they are learning different algorithms to solve the puzzles within a few seconds. It improves students’ eye-hand coordination and also it improves student’s concentration in general and ensures that they are able to process their thoughts faster.
On Thursdays and Fridays from 2.45 pm to 3.45 pm, students get an opportunity to solve Mathematical problems which are different from the usual class room questions. Students are getting prepared for different International Olympiads. We are waiting for SEAMO 2018 results and the medal winners will represent British School and Sri Lanka in Singapore in January 2019. The Waterloo University Mathematical Olympiad will be in February 2019 for Years 10 to 13 and for Years 7 to 9 Contest will be in May 2019.
