Over the last few weeks, Year 5 have continued to enjoy their learning journey with Kaspar – Prince of Cats in Literacy lessons. Through the exploration of the story, children have been developing their vocabulary, writing composition, grammar and punctuation skills. The children’s love of the story’s characters has enabled them to apply the writing skills they are learning to a variety of different text types. We hope you enjoy the letter below written in role as Johnny Trott, who has found himself aboard the Titanic as a stowaway!
Dear Countess Kandinsky,
I really wish you were here because so much has happened! When you passed away, the hotel was plunged into grief. I was affected the most. Poor, downcast Kaspar with his now not-so-sleek fur hardly ate or drank. He yowled piteously, pining for you. Every night I would dream about this and decided to take him to my room in the servant’s quarter. He still refused to eat…until Lizziebeth came.
At first, I thought she was another little, rich aristocrat, but she was able to feed Kaspar! I was overjoyed and a little jealous. Kaspar changed from a miserable invalid to a strong and healthy prince over the course of a few weeks. One day, Skullface burst in! Skullface (Mrs. Blaise), is a grumpy grouch and has clear rules: NO PETS IN THE SERVANTS ROOMS! Lizziebeth was quick thinking and imitated Kaspar to save his life.
Once though, Lizabeth was scaling the roof of The Savoy, trying to feed a lame pigeon. I climbed after her and managed to get her onto a ridge before the fire-brigade came. We were rescued, I was a hero! We had a celebratory dinner and everyone clapped for me except Skullface, obviously!
Mr. Stanton (Lizziebeth’s dad) thanked me and gave me fifty ponds because I had saved Lizziebeth’s life. Since I had never seen so much money, I was delighted! But, soon after, Skullface barged into my room. “You have a choice Johnny! Give me yer money and I’ll let you keep the cat for a while or get out!” she rasped and sneered at me like a prince to a pauper. I gave her the money and told Lizziebeth what happened. She then told her dad the next morning and Skullface was fired.
Because I had honored the name of the Savoy Hotel, I was allowed to accompany the Stanton family to their ship, the Titanic, before they left for New York. When I left their cabin after saying goodbye, I made a choice. I would give Kaspar to Lizziebeth. I hope you aren’t too mad at me about this? Anyway, as I left, I decided to stay on the ship because it was similar to a palace.
I waved goodbye like a passenger and when the ship left, I realized that I was now a stowaway on the Titanic.
I just want to live a happy life, a life with freedom.
I miss you.
Johnny Trott.
