On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of September 2018, the HOPE Society teamed up with the Rotaract Club of Wellawatta in order to paint the walls of the Surasa Home in Moratuwa. This was the HOPE Society’s first project for the year, and our main objective was to paint the walls and interact with the residents at the home.
The day started at around 9:45 a.m. where everyone assembled in the school reception awaiting departure, which took place at around 10:15 am. Once they arrived at the home at around 11:30 am, they acquainted with the members of the Rotaract Club and settled down into their work space.
HOPE volunteers were asked to wipe down the walls to get rid of dust and tape up the bottom of the wall with newspaper to prevent paint dripping on the floor. After wiping and taping, members of the society were split into groups and given buckets of paint and paintbrushes. With the guide of a professional painter, they were able to understand how they should paint. It was a great experience for first-timers. While the little kids rotated around painting and wiping the lower parts of the walls, the older ones where asked to help with painting to upper part of wall using a roller and by climbing up ladders to get to the tough creases.
The first session ended at 1:30 pm for lunch. Once they finished with lunch, they met the residents of the home. The ladies at the home sang many songs, while a few performed solos. Afterwards, the HOPE volunteers played a round of musical chairs with the ladies! A few of the ladies were very competitive which made it enjoyable for the spectators and for the participants. Once the game came to an end, they took pictures with the ladies and the members of the Rotaract Club. We enjoyed our visit to Surasa!
