Over the past month in their science lessons, the Year 6 students investigated the major organs and organ systems of the human body. The unit of work mainly focused on the digestive, nervous, circulatory, excretory and respiratory systems.
Students gained a deeper understanding of the human body by participating in a range of practical activities in which they focused on a particular organ system. For example, for the digestive system, students created labelled diagrams and models using recyclable materials.
To examine the respiratory system and our bodies need for more oxygen when exercising, students recorded their resting breathing rate followed by their breathing rate after exercise.
When studying the excretory system and the kidneys, the students discovered the different ways doctors can treat kidney disease including transplants and dialysis.
Students also had the opportunity to work in groups and research illnesses that effect the major organs. Following their research, students shared their findings with the rest of the class.
