BSC STUDENTS AT SEAMO MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD

It is well known that Mathematics competitions generate a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity for the subject. This aspect of Mathematics competitions is becoming more and more important. It is therefore very important that we continue to emphasise that Mathematics is about thinking, discovery, validation and techniques of problem solving. On Saturday the 8th of September 2018, 63 students from Years 3 to 13 participated in the Mathematical Olympiad conducted by SEAMO Singapore. Students from many South East Asian countries that participate in the competition. We are conducting this exam for the second time at the British School.

Every participant in the SEAMO papers were challenged by at least one problem and this will improve participant’s problem solving skills and the capacity for creative thinking.

Creative problem solving skills are necessary and marketable in today's technically oriented market place. Hence, we need expert problem solvers. Practice in problem solving will help train our future leaders of technological development.

The results for this competition will be released on 26th October 2018.The top performers from each country will be invited to represent their country to take part in the extended round, SEAMO– X in January 2019 in Singapore.

BSC Maths Circle, an afterschool activity, provides training and conducts examinations for Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad conducted by SEAMO Singapore and Mathematics Olympiad competitions organised by the University of Waterloo, Canada. Waterloo University Maths competitions will be for Years 10 to 13 on the 27th February 2019 and for Years 7 to 9 on the16th May 2019.
