It has been a busy and productive week in the Senior School and I am delighted that our students have settled well in to the new school year!
We celebrated national successes in Swimming competitions in our assembly on Monday morning. It is always a pleasure to focus on our students’ many extra-curricular achievements in so many endeavours.
Our programme of after school Clubs and Societies commenced this week as did preparations and trials for the upcoming Inter-House Swimming Gala, always a particularly popular and hotly contested Inter-House Event.
The British School is very proud of its structured and supportive programme of university guidance for our Sixth Form students. This week, the programme began in earnest, with representatives from more than 25 international universities visiting the school in our annual UK and Australian University Fairs. We also welcomed delegated from some universities in the USA. Further events will take place throughout the year to help our students make informed and confident choices about their undergraduate studies. These visits are supported by individual meetings with the Head of Sixth Form as well as our in-house SAT Preparation Programme for students planning to study in the USA.
It was a pleasure to welcome parents to the Parents Workshop introducing our comprehensive PSHE programme on Tuesday morning. Ms Jehan Abhayrathne and Ms Nici Newbold, who will be delivering PSHE lessons to all students in Years 7 to 11 briefed parents on the programme’s structure and content. This forum will, of course, be followed up with a range of workshops throughout the year to nurture the close home-school relationship that is so very important to the work we do at BSC.
With this vital focus on the pastoral wellbeing of our students, the British School has changed the structure of its pastoral care. As the school grows, we now have individual Year Leaders in Key Stages 3 and 4 who will look after students in each Year Group and co-ordinate the respective Form Tutors. This is a significant innovation to ensure the personal and academic monitoring of the young people in our care. Our Year Leaders are:
Year 7 Ms Mahum Kidwai [email protected]
Year 8 Ms Cini Jins [email protected]
Year 9 Mr Derek Dolson [email protected]
Year 10 Ms Claire McQuaid [email protected]
Year 11 Ms Sylvana Marjan Sylvana.Marjan@ britishschool.lk.
Our Year Leaders will be working closely with you in the weeks ahead. Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have any concerns.
A lively Friday Morning saw the whole school gather for a special Founders’ Day Assembly. In a programme of music and dance, we celebrated the 24th anniversary of the British School, a very special learning community indeed.
I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion! Have a wonderful weekend.
With best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
