Students who graduated from BSC in June 2018 are about to embark on university courses in Canada, Ireland, Japan, Korea, the UAE, the UK, the USA and Malaysia, with many more currently applying to attend university in the southern hemisphere starting in early 2019. Such a diverse range of destinations means that the world is truly at the fingertips of the students who graduate from the British School in Colombo. However, gaining admittance to university is not an easy straightforward process, and requires students to start planning their pathway to university as early as possible.
New Year 12s may have barely completed two weeks of their A Level courses, but nevertheless, the focus of the Enrichment programme has been on where they will go after completing their A Levels. Enrichment sessions in the first week of term focused on what students should be looking for in a university; the structure of the course, the costs involved, the career opportunities and the application process. This was all in preparation for the second week of term, when the school hosted a number of universities to speak to students and show what opportunities are available.
On Monday 3rd of August, BSC hosted a UK university fair with 11 excellent UK universities in attendance, 8 of whom were from the prestigious ‘Russel Group’ of research orientated universities. This was followed on Tuesday morning by the university of Nagoya from Japan, who offer a growing range of courses taught in the English medium.
Later on Tuesday, an admissions officer from Rollins College was the first US university of the academic year to visit. He gave a thorough explanation of the different types of university offered in the US, and what life in his esteemed Liberal Arts College was like. Finally, on the morning of Wednesday 5th September we hosted an Australian university fair, with a range of 10 universities attending, with four of the ‘Group of Eight’.
Whilst the vast array of opportunities on offer to our students can at times seem daunting, it is important for students to engage with the task of applying to university as early as possible.
Ideally, Year 12 students should have a plan of where they want to apply by Christmas, so that they can make sure everything is in place for the process to be as straight forward as possible.
