Year 6 Evacuee Day

Share
General Junior

Over the past six weeks, our Year 6 students have been immersed in learning about World War 2. As part of their studies, the children had the opportunity to visit the Commonwealth War Graves, where they delved deeper into the stories of the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our future.

To culminate this topic, we organized a special event to celebrate their independent learning and projects. On Evacuation Day, our Year 6 learners transformed into children from World War 2 who were being evacuated from London. Some of them carried suitcases filled with their clothing, a cherished teddy bear, and homemade gas masks.

During this memorable day, the learners were given the freedom to choose a project that truly interested them. This not only allowed them to delve deeper into their chosen area but also provided an invaluable opportunity to discuss and share their newfound knowledge with our wonderful Year 6 parents, teachers, and friends.

Throughout the day, we engaged in various activities that were prevalent during wartime. The children had the chance to create Blitz artwork, crack codes, and present their group work to the class. To simulate the experiences of children during that era, air raid sirens were sounded periodically, prompting the children to seek shelter and gain a sense of what their counterparts in the past had endured.

As the day drew to a close, we fostered further discussion, held quizzes, and enjoyed engaging presentations. We even incorporated a lively Kahoot session to reinforce the learning. Overall, the day was not only productive but also brimming with enjoyable experiences, enabling the children to gain a deeper understanding of what life was truly like during World War 2.

Please find below some thought about WW2 and Evacuee Day  shared by our Year 6 learners.

Evacuee Day-6A

Today at school, we arrived dressed as evacuees, ready to showcase our projects related to World War 2. Our projects included secret messages, WW2 models, and various types of food from that era. Parents had the opportunity to visit each table, trying to solve codes, admiring the models, and sampling the different foods. Afterward, we presented our projects to our parents. Upon returning to the classroom, we engaged in an art project focused on the London Blitz. While working on our art, our teacher played the sound of an air raid siren, and we had to quickly hide under our desks until the code word "purple" was announced, allowing us to come out. Later, Mr. Ben visited our class to review the PowerPoint presentations we had created about what we learned in humanities. Finally, we wrapped up the day by playing a game called Blooket.

Evacuee Day Experience- 6B

Today, Year 6 celebrated evacuee day, where we shared what we have been learning about WW2 in our lessons. All the students dressed up as evacuees, and we each created our own projects throughout the month on various topics. We were encouraged to be creative and demonstrate our capabilities through our diverse projects. Each project was unique and entirely our own creation. For instance, one project involved cooking classic WW2 food and presenting it to our parents, teachers, and friends. We also engaged in Blitz art, where we used different materials to create scenes depicting the bombings during the Blitz. We watched a video on the German bombing campaign, which highlighted the struggles faced by the citizens of Britain and Germany. We have had a comprehensive learning experience connecting us to WW2.

Our Experience with World War 2 Learning- 6C

From the moment we started learning about World War 2, we were filled with excitement. We created timelines, conducted research, identified the countries involved, and planned lessons. Today, we had the opportunity to showcase our projects on Evacuee Day. Some of us created models, devised secret codes, made collages, conducted interviews, prepared authentic WW2 food, and even composed songs. Our parents also attended the event, witnessing our creativity and knowledge. We dressed up as characters from this significant period in history and made new friendships along the way. We learned valuable lessons that will stay with us throughout our journey in life.

Evacuee Day-6D

Evacuee Day in 6D was a fantastic display of the children's creativity through their diverse projects. They created posters about World War 2, built shelters used during the war, and even prepared recipes from that era. It was thrilling to witness the talented children's projects and see their unique creations. One of the standout recipes was a soup made with vegetable broth, onions, celery, and beetroot. The day was filled with fun, as the kids wore amazing costumes representing people from World War 2. There were also challenging codes for the parents to decipher but proved to be quite difficult. Overall, it was an exciting and engaging day.
