Sports not only builds better athletes but it builds better people’

Julie Foudy

It has been action packed term with many sporting events taking place and it has not quite finished yet.  We still have the opportunity to end the term on a high as we have teams representing us in the U16 Futsal Tournament, U16 &U18 TISSL Netball and the U14 Girls TISSL Football Tournament.  For me, one of the prominent features of our BSC students is their passion for sport and their willingness to participate and commit, as a result we are able to field teams for all sports, with the exception of Volleyball. This is a remarkable achievement and regardless of the results, the benefits for our students is enormous.

‘Sport can teach values such as fairness, teambuilding, equality, discipline, inclusion, perseverance and respect. Sport has the power to provide a framework for learning values, thus contributing to the development of soft skills needed for responsible citizenship’.

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” – Albert Einstein

One of the flagship events on the sports calendar, the ISAC Athletics Championship, was held in February and I am delighted to say we had 71 students participating, I believe that is the most students we have ever registered and I know that will increase next year.  We managed to win 3 Bronze medals and one Silver, in addition to this, we also had 5 students achieving the Merit Standard for their event. The passion and support from our community was excellent and I am confident this will help us to improve year on year.

Our footballers have proven that they are competitive and can give any school a tough match.  Our U20 girl’s players some excellent and stylish football during the TISSL Tournament and lost the final on a penalty shootout.  It is always tough to lose on penalties but the way they conducted themselves in defeat was commendable.  Our boys came 4th in their tournament and faced a skillful side in the semi-finals but again their desire and effort was visible for all to see.

We have participated in many swimming events this term with our swimmers winning many individual medals, achieving PB’s and achieving the qualifying standard for major events.  Our Netball, Basketball and Cricket teams have all competed in TISSL competitions and been competitive throughout.  Our Cricket Squads have shown excellent commitment in training and consistently performed to a high standard, although the competition is fierce; progress is evident.

We wish all our participants and teams the very best of luck for the upcoming tournaments and I am confident that they will once again represent BSC excellently demonstrating all those values that are so important, respect, integrity, effort and knowing how to win graciously and be humble in defeat.

Thank you for your continued support with school sport
