Phonics is a successful way of teaching young children to read and write. While phonics is an essential part of becoming an independent reader, equally important is developing the motivation to read and enjoy high quality texts, leading to a lifelong desire to read for purpose and fulfilment. Phonics also feeds into all areas of the curriculum.
Year One students have been very busy this term learning phonics sounds in small groups. We have ten groups and ten teachers to assist us in recognising the sounds that each individual letter makes, identifying the sounds that different combinations of letters make, and blending these sounds together from left to right to form words.
Every morning, it's a joy to see children enthusiastically engaged in phonics activities in the Year 1 corridor and classes, becoming more confident readers and writers.
