SS Safer Internet Week

General Senior

We are extremely delighted that we were able to celebrate Safer Internet Week this month once again with all Senior School students at BSC. The internet is an extremely powerful tool with enormous opportunities for learning; however, with opportunities come risks. The goal of Safer Internet Week was to raise awareness, and actively take concrete actions to provide protection and empowerment for our students online.

We express our huge thanks to Ms. Jehan and Ms. Naomi for organising the respective Key Stage assemblies during this week. The whole school theme for this year was chosen to be ‘Want to Talk About?’ and the same provided the platform for our young learners to be engaged in active dialogue reflecting on their role of being responsible for their own use of technology at school as well as at home.

One of the main activities during this time was to have students identify thought provoking/controversial topics (and these were deliberately embedded to the plan).  This allowed students to think about ‘red flags’ thus allowing them to find ways to navigate through the process of understanding the next steps for them as individuals in the digital world. It is vital that students identify the 3 Cs in the digital world – content, conduct and contact. The Computer Science Society was also involved in sharing quizzes for each Key Stage and students had the opportunity to check their understanding of online safety.

During the week, we encouraged our students to detox from their devices during first and lunch break. This provided the opportunity for your children to mingle with their peers and re-connect with others engaging in face-to-face interactions!

Over the years, Safer Internet Day has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar for many schools and institutions around the world, and BSC is no different to acknowledging its place in our calendar. The digital world knows no borders, and we need our students, parents and staff all to join in and work with each other to ensure a safe and better digital experience for us all.
