Interhouse debating was one of the few events to occur during online learning. It is great to see it back in physical school this year.
The first round of debates occurred before half term and set up some interesting finals last week with the following teams:
1st/2nd place Finals
KS3 – Shakespeare Proposing; Newton Opposing.
KS4 – Newton Proposing; Scott Opposing.
6TH Form – Shakespeare Proposing; Noble Opposing
3rd/4th play-offs
KS3 – Nobel Proposing; Scott Opposing.
KS4 – Nobel Proposing; Shakespeare Opposing.
6TH Form – Scott Proposing; Newton Opposing
The debate topics:
KS3:
This house believes that there is nothing wrong with being selfish.
KS4:
This house believes that the world has become more intolerant than before.
KS5:
This house believes that media companies control the world's mindset.
The topics for each key stage created some interesting debates including the idea it is ok to be selfish when we choose to pick a career that others don’t agree with, that tolerance may lead to more intolerance, alongside some significant head scratching for the judges and audience as to whether or not the worlds media have mind control.
In the end Newton cam out victors in KS3 and KS4 while Shakespeare were the successful team in the Sixth Form.
Overall it end up with a draw for first place between Newton and Shakespeare. Scott and Nobel coming in joint third.
