Year 6 trip to Kithulgala

Share
General Junior

The most anticipated trip in Junior School.

Children look forward to the Year 6 Kithulgala trip for its adventures, the view, and the ever-increasing learning. As the children learn to be comfortable with an unfamiliar environment amid nature, they are provided with an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones.

This is also an excellent opportunity for children to disconnect and be in nature, for the virtual world has played a huge role in their lives with the pandemic and the ongoing situation in Sri Lanka.

This is a perfect opportunity that aids in building confidence, taking increased responsibility, and being engaged in activities. Children brought out their innovative ideas during team-building activities, coaxing them to try new things and reflect on their achievements.

The excursion provided our Year 6s with an experience, unlike other adventure tours. The weather made our journey challenging; however, this only provided an opportunity for children to think promptly and think of each other.

Our year 6 students enjoyed every moment bonding with nature and their peers alike. They developed their Cambridge learner attributes at many moments during the trip. They developed empathy and were considerate of one another building a good understanding of relationships.

The journey to the massive Belilena cave at Kitulgala had its own challenges, including a tricky pathway that required the children to be consistent and mindful, use their senses, and follow directions with alertness. Team games set by our Borderlands Team assisted children in developing their leadership skills.

Children found the saying "The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain" particularly fascinating, and they realized that the rain would not hinder our Year 6 learners from having a good time or from accomplishing their purpose. The well-structured indoor games fostered new talents, and it also allowed our Year 6 students the opportunity to make new friends in parallel classes.

For some students, this meant gaining some milestone experiences. This was their first journey away from home and on their own. With the guidance and encouragement of their teachers and friends, they were able to overcome the perplexing emotion of being away from home. It was memorable when several students stated that "it felt like a home away from home" and that "you can achieve marvels with the proper team and drive."

This trip will be remembered fondly by the teachers, students, and their parents. This unique experience will enable our exceptional students to face any adversity or scenario. Nothing beats the hands-on experience that deepens the learning and nature can be our greatest teacher.
