Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest

General Junior

The Year 6 learners have invested the last two weeks in developing their persuasive writing skills. Now they have grown into creating brochures that not only persuaded the readers to visit the “Lungs of the Planet” but also showcased their newly enhanced skills and knowledge with pride.

Seeing the Amazon Rainforest through the eyes of the main character, Maia, in the book Journey to the River Sea, the learners were given a new opportunity to think differently. This enhanced the flavour of their writing, increasing the persuasive elements. The willing and positive attitude towards the setting has enabled the Year 6s to dive deeper and research more about the rainforest, nurturing their curious minds.

Embedding persuasive techniques, figurative language and advanced punctuation, Year 6 learners designed holiday brochures that met the Year 6 writing standards. They used a checklist to self-assess their own brochures and edited their work in purple, meeting their next steps.

Our humanities lessons on South America connected to the topics in English, which gave our learners more reasons to explore, read and think deeper. Our English lesson on persuasive writing will add value to our next lesson on argumentative writing, which will inspire students to participate in debates—the Deforestation Debate, where their new knowledge will be their strength.

This is something we are all looking forward to.
