General Senior

The sixth Annual Maths Week was organized with tremendous excitement from Monday, March 14 to Friday, March 18, 2022. It was another successful Maths Week, after a year off due to the Covid pandemic since 2020. Students took part in many enrichment activities connected to different aspects of mathematics. The week began with a combined Years 7 and 8 assembly in preparation for the international Pi Day celebration on Monday, March 14, 2022. Online Mathematics Quizzes for each Key Stage, the Human Calculator Competition, the Pi Bee Competition, the Rubik's Cube Challenge, the Sudoku Championship, and the Maths Video Competition were among the activities available. Maths Circle leaders took the initiative to hold a Key Stage 3 maths week assembly on Wednesday and Friday and some Form Time activities for students during the week.

Maths is about understanding, not only dealing with numbers, equations, calculations, or algorithms. Mathematics may be found in almost every aspect of life, from nature all around us to the technology in our hands. Mathematics fosters the development of computational skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The activities were created to help students develop their logical thinking and innovative skills. Through four houses, students participated in group and individual events.

Maths Quiz

Key Stage 5 quizzes were administered, with questions closely connected to the concepts covered in Mathematics in Years 12 and 13. Furqan Arif of Year 12 was in charge of the KS5 quiz, supervised by Mr Bala. Nobel House, comprised of Mansoor Akbarally, Ayame Iwata, and Aseka Dahanayaka, won first place. Raveesh Fernando led the KS4 quiz, which Ms Rasanjalee has overseen. Nobel House came first, with Ishan Kahandawalaarachchi, Liyara Weerawansa, and Maya Vitarana as participants. Imadh Mashoor conducted the Key Stage 3 Quiz, under the supervision of  Mr Naleem. Shakespeare House came first, with Arun Sumathiratne, Bilal Mohamed Ali, and Sethumi Wickramamunige taking part.

Rubik's Cube Challenge

It was great to see many cabers competing in this competition. It is widely held that new and demanding workouts are advantageous to a person. There is no hidden trick. It is only a process that they must learn and perfect. It is not difficult to learn. It improves your ability to think in diverse scenarios, and the greatest thing about the game is that it doesn't provide you with any hints on how to solve the cube. It is not a matter of chance; it is all about their abilities.

We had some outstanding cubers compete in the challenge, and it was wonderful to see Aaryan of Year 13 won the competition with 20 seconds, Hari Jashwanth of Year 13 come in second with 21.08 seconds. Ishmam Labeeb of Year 9B come in third with 22 seconds. Ms Hemamali and Ms Melissa arranged this year's Rubik's Cube challenge tournament.

Sudoku Championship

Sudoku is a game of logic, problem-solving, and pattern recognition - it's a genuine "brain game" that helps challenge people's cognitive powers while also providing the joy of completing a challenging puzzle. Playing Sudoku is entertaining, but it also allows us to improve our sense of time. It also aids in the development of our patience and attention. Many students participated in this Tournament, and Ema Iwata from year 10A won the championship, with Arun Sumathiratne and Nethumlee Ekanayake coming in second and third place, respectively. Mr Thisara was in charge of organizing the Tournament.

Pi Bee Competition

The three finalists, Arun Sumathiratne, Praveen Athauda-Arachchi, and Shivangi Singh, from Year 8, wondering how they could retain and recollect a large number of digits of the mathematical constant Pi on Monday, March 14, International Pi Day, during the finals. Arun Sumathiratne from Year 8A is this year's winner. He could recite the first 910 digits of Pi. Praveen Athauda-Arachchi of year 8A comes in second with 164 digits of pi. Shivangi Singh of Year 8D came in third place by pronouncing 104 digits of pi. Mr Bala, Ms Hemamali, and Mr Naleem, the judges, had the difficult duty of thoroughly scrutinizing the pupils' speedy recitation. Ms Chandanie was in charge of conducting this year's Pi Bee competition.

Arun is now be ranked 228th globally, moving Bull, Michael from the United Kingdom to 229th. He is also the third highest-ranked Sri Lankan in the global ranking record. Deeksha Udagedara, who set a record of 2280 digits of pi during Maths Week 2019, is currently ranked 94th in the World Pi Ranking List and 1st from Sri Lanka.

The Human Calculator Competition

Ayame Iwata of Year 12 took first place in the human calculator competition for the second consecutive time. She is the BSC's quickest human calculator. Arun and Praveen from Year 8A came in second and third place, respectively.

Math Video Competition

The Maths Movie Competition was a new addition to this year's activities. It was designed to stimulate creativity and innovation by applying mathematical ideas to real-life situations in a three-minute short video. Praveen Athauda-Arachchi, Arun Sumathiratne, Jehan Fernando, and Zara Bourhis finished first through fourth in this Tournament.

It was great to see that students from Shakespeare house received 155 points, Nobel house received 125 points, Newton house received 75 points, and Scott received 40 points. Maths Week 2022 awarded 75 points to Shakespeare house, 60 points to Nobel house, 36 points to Newton, and 19 to Scott house to their overall score.

Maths contests aid students in many ways, including developing innovative capacity and thinking abilities whose usefulness extends well beyond mathematics. They are the most effective technique of finding and fostering mathematical potential. Students may improve their mathematics abilities and confidence in the subject via various competitions, which ultimately contribute to their school grades and aid them in many ways later in life for decision making and logical thinking. It is also a fantastic opportunity for children who want to push themselves and develop in mathematics. The activities for this year were coordinated by the Maths Circle Leaders from Year 12, who were headed by Imadh Mashoor, Ayame Iwate, Furqan Arif, Raveesha Fernando, and Deeksha Udagedera.
