Bronze Level Adventurous Journeys at BSC

General Senior

It is well noted that the preparation for An Adventurous Journey in the International Award is a challenging one. We have now successfully completed a majority of the Practice and Qualifying Journeys for the Bronze Level with COVID-19 protocols in place.

During the half-term break, the much-awaited Bronze Level Qualifying Journeys to Kalawana, Sinharaja Rainforest took place and a majority of our participants in Years 9, 10 and 11, completed their Qualifying Journeys paying attention to physical agility and mental strength. Another group of participants completed their Practice Journey to Hanwella last weekend, and this camping experience offered them a taste of the outdoors as well as the opportunity to pay attention to the requirements of the Qualifying Journey scheduled for early April.

It was a challenging yet an exciting time for every member of the groups. Our participants had much to share upon their arrival at school and their reflections include how the journey has “transformed” them in the process of competing their Adventurous Journey. Participants’ perseverance, resilience, team work and understanding of one’s true self were encapsulated in their own personal reflections and these are true markings of one’s changes in life.

‘One of my favourite things about the Hanwella trip was going on the three hikes and making breakfast, these were my favourite things because we worked as a team and it was very fun to cooperate together and have fun during the trip.’ - Ariyana Fernando

‘My favourite part of Hanwella was finding a new part of yourself that you never knew you had as well as bond with your classmates with team activities.’- Emika Boreham

‘My favorite thing about Hanwella was having to make our own food and going hiking!’- Shenara Fernando

‘My favorite thing at Hanwella was flipping the pancakes and preparing breakfast!’ - Misha Boreham

‘One of my favourite parts about Hanwella is how we got to do tasks and things we don't normally do on a daily basis - such as hiking along a rock, map/compass reading, finding our way around obstacles as a team.’- Radhi Mediwake

‘My favourite about Kalawana was the nature because it was very fascinating to see, especially, the mother species of fruits that we eat today! The flora was very vibrant, and the scenery was indescribably pretty.’ – Thanara Liyanage

We are indeed proud of our Bronze Level participants’ performances, and it has been a rewarding experience for us as Award Leaders to witness the positive changes in young individuals in our school community.
