During 1st period of every Friday morning, Year 12 students who are just new to the Sixth Form, are already considering their future pathway beyond their time at BSC and learning about how to apply to university. This week’s contemplations involved a panel discussion with students who graduated BSC in 2019 and are now entering their second year of university in the UK.
The panel comprised Adithi Holey, who is currently entering 2nd Year at University College London reading Biochemical Engineering, Vidusha Chandrasena who is entering 2nd Year at the University of Bristol reading Mechanical Engineering, and Danuk Udagama who is entering 2nd Year at Warwick reading Computer Science. All 3 universities are members of the elite Russel Group of Universities, which many BSC students through the years have progressed to attending.
It was fascinating to hear the students compare their experiences of first year of university, and how the location of the university can make such a difference, with everything central London has to offer being on the doorstep of UCL, in comparison to the more compact and livable city of Bristol, and life on a purpose built modern campus in Warwick.
The students discussed their experiences in 1st year, including their courses, living expenses, administrative tasks like opening bank accounts, making new friends and dealing with homesickness. I hope that hearing them speak about their exciting new lives inspires students in Year 12 to work hard at their A Levels and strive to emulate those on the panel.
Interestingly, their biggest piece of advice for the students of Year 12 was that they should learn to cook and do laundry now, so that they don’t have to learn while at university when they’re dealing with everything else. This made me laugh, because I can clearly remember giving the same advice to these students three years ago when they were in Year 12 – let’s hope that the next generation of students are willing to learn from their mistakes!
