This year, #BSCEnglish are generating even more excitement than usual with our involvement in the prestigious FOBISIA Creative Writing Competition. Students signed up or were also nominated by their English teachers, for this short story contest, and are required to write 1000 words or less based on the prompt “Protect”.
To help them in this endeavour, the English Department launched the first ever round of Creative Writing Workshops. The first workshop, held on the 17th January, was led by our very own Year 12 English student, Theruni Hettithanthrige. Theruni spoke with enthusiasm to all 45 students who attended about her own writing journey and how she overcame hurdles when it came to publishing both her collection of poetry and short stories. Her experiences helped to give perspective to our budding writers and ensured that everyone took away something useful from the session.
The next workshop was held on the 24th of January and was focused on creating interesting figurative language and ensuring that stories made structural sense. We looked in particular at creating abstract metaphors – one of our favourite student creations was that “grief is an eternal tide”. We are so excited to see the fruits of our students’ labour and look forward to sharing them with the BSC community!
