Our humanities topic this term focused on 'Rivers, Deserts and Volcanoes' and the students have gained a deeper understanding about objectives like how rivers are formed, the location of deserts and what causes a volcanic eruption.
Recently, students examined volcanoes and as part of their study, students created their own models of volcanoes; students were encouraged to be as creative as possible but had to try and source materials for their projects from household items and materials they already had. Allowing students to have freedom and choice in how to create their models encouraged innovation as well as giving students the opportunity to be hands-on. Materials like clay, paper mache, bottles, soil, rocks and plants were used and some students even completed the inside of the volcano, designing the magma chamber and vents.
In order to test their learning and knowledge about volcanoes and some historic eruptions, the students participated in a series of Kahoot! quizzes and also had the opportunity to write from the perspective of a survivor from the eruption in Pompeii.
