Kindness

In assembly last week Miss Jehan and I presented on the theme of kindness. We focused on the school values of ‘relationships’ and ‘personal enrichment’ identifying ways that kindness can shape and create a positive emotional climate.

Miss Jehan reflected on the science of kindness, identifying studies that have shown the importance of human connection for humans as social animals. We need to feel supported, valued, and loved. Studies show that those who have good relationships are happier, healthier, and live longer than those who report feeling lonely. We are all so fortunate to be members of a community characterized by benevolence, generosity of spirit and compassion. I see this every day, in so many little ways from parents, students and staff. Kindness is the cornerstone of supportive relationships and it’s something we all have a capacity for.

We looked at the way that the altruistic act of kindness provides enrichment for the person being kind, promotes positive physiological changes in the brain associated with happiness, helping to reduce negative feelings and isolation. This is the third time in the last 12 months that kindness has provided an assembly theme, we will continue to return to it as preserving this is essential to maintaining the soul of BSC. Thank you to all our students who shared 2 positive complements with their peers in assembly and thank you for all you do every day to contribute to the positive atmosphere in the school.

Finally, thank you to all the parents who have been in touch to congratulate my wife and I on the birth of our baby girl last week, we have been overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness, your kindness is very much appreciated.
