Last week in Key Stage 1, the children loved participating in lots of different mathematical activities as part of Maths Week. The Year 1 and 2 children buddied up to help each other with practical activities involving subtraction, addition, measurement and time.
They worked together to use their mental maths and reasoning skills to solve problems and answer questions in each of these topics. All the staff were so proud to see how cooperatively and collaboratively the Year 1s and 2’s worked in order to solve the problems.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the children were so excited to compete in their houses to play maths games on each of the topics we covered earlier in the week. In Year 1, Hobbit came first and in Year 2, it was Griffin! We then had a showdown in Friday’s assembly with a maths quiz which really tested the children’s mental maths skills. Each house had a chance to answer their own questions, with other houses having a chance to steal if an incorrect answer was given.
In the end, there was just 1 point between first and second.. Unicorn came second with 74 points and Centaur came first with 75 points! Well done to Griffin and to all the children for supporting each other! Everyone showed such maturity and perseverance to work together as a team.
We are looking forward to seeing how the children can keep using the skills they learnt in their maths lessons and seeing what other problems they can solve.
