COMUN 2019 dawned bright and early on Friday, the 1st of March, and Team BSC were ready to take on the challenge of a weekend of debate, resolution writing, diplomacy and fun!
The Opening Ceremony held on Friday morning at the Overseas School of Colombo saw Mr. Tim Sutton (Head of the UNICEF Mission in Sri Lanka) as its Chief Guest, and our students were privileged enough to listen to him speak about the importance of eliminating violence within schools around the world, and in Sri Lanka specifically.
We then watched as our EXCO Members were inducted by Mr. Sutton and Janek De Silva (Secretary General for COMUN 2019), and assumed their roles for Conference.
The British School in Colombo had the largest representation within the Secretariat and EXCO of COMUN this year, and this is a marvelous feat to have achieved, and lies testament to the work done by the students of the past at BSC. Our EXCO members included Husein, Nirek, Tehra, Nikita, Yenuli, Prisha, and Mindi, and they were led by Janek and Mandri who were the Secretary General and Head of Administration respectively. Theekshana led our BSC delegation as its ‘Head Delegate’ this year, and Chanya did a fabulous job of coordinating them all as ‘Student Coordinator’.
Those three days of Conference saw the discussion of a plethora of topics, ranging from international peace and security to economic crises, and developed the research and public speaking skills of our students, many of whom were novice delegates this year.
Sunday evening saw the end of what was an exceptionally successful conference for us, with the Closing Ceremony holding many moments of happiness and joy for us all.
The outstanding results of Conference are as follows:
• BSC were named Runners-Up for the Community Service Award, losing out to OSC just marginally, but having done a spectacular job of contributing 208 school bags full of stationery to students in underprivileged schools in the north of the country.
• Theekshana won an ‘Honorary Mention’ as the Delegate of USA in General Assembly 4
• Inuri won the award for ‘Best Journalist’ in the Third General Assembly
• Aksaaya won the award for ‘Best Corporation’ within the International Press
• Leon won a ‘Higher Commendation’ as an Administrative Staff Member
• Tiasha won the award for the ‘Best Foreign Policy Statement’ in the G20 Committee
Overall, this has been one of the most successful and enjoyable MUN experiences #TeamBSC has ever had, and in celebrating 25 years of COMUN, we can safely say that BSC ruled the roost! I am incredibly proud of Janek and the manner in which he led his EXCO at Conference, as well as for all his contribution to MUN over the years. I cannot forget the tireless effort and energy that Mandri possesses, and the incredible support that Chanya has given towards every aspect of MUN too. Husein and the drive and responsibility with which he spear-headed the International Press and all his journalists this Conference was par excellence, and without these Office Bearers and their determination, love and enthusiasm, MUN would not have reached the heights that it has for BSC today. I am truly grateful.
Now we look forward to next year and reaching newer milestones, with wider smiles!
