On Friday, January 25th the Year 10 Geography students travelled to Galle Fort to conduct research on the effects of tourism in Sri Lanka, specifically in the Galle area. The day started early, with the students arriving at BSC at 6 am, all with smiles on their faces, ready for the short journey down to the Southwest coast. They were armed with pens, pencils, measuring tapes, snacks and music - all of the resources they needed for a day of fieldwork study. Upon arrival the students were split into four groups, each assigned a designated area of the Fort.
They were tasked with looking at traffic in the Fort area, both motorized and pedestrian, they identified land use, land value, quality of infrastructure and how global Galle has become relative to international tourism. The day was capped off with a lovely lunch at the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, where the students were able to unwind, enjoy great food and soak in the beautiful view of the Laccadive Sea.
A special Thanks to Mrs. Cini, Mrs. Hemamali and Mr. Fergus for all of their help, the day would not have been possible without their support. The students are now in the process of collating the data collected and will soon start their individual analysis. I am incredibly proud of how the students conducted themselves, they truly represented BSC in an outstanding fashion - I look forward to our second day of fieldwork in March.
