The Environment Society has been working on the topic Green Architecture for the last couple of weeks. They worked on the concept of ‘Green Architecture’ and how is it different in different parts of the world. While looking at the layout, design and materials used, students identified the reasons why certain parts of the world had unique architectural styles.
On the 11th of December, Ms Thilo Wanigasekara, an environmentalist by nature who is a chartered architect, spoke to the students about the concept of Green Architecture around the world drawing examples from Sri Lanka and around the world. She emphasized on how traditional architecture had incorporated the elements of Green Architecture which is now becoming popular. She introduced the concepts of adobe, E- glass and even ‘Spaceship Earth’.
The students asked questions about the limited shift to using renewable energy resources in the building process and as well as the low preference of biodegradable materials. It was interesting to note how the students were beginning to question what they saw around them as typically ‘Green’.
