The whole of year 3 had a fabulous trip to Nuga Gama on Friday 2nd, based around their humanities topic ‘locality’. The children were greeted with ambrella welcome drinks and cookies before they dived in to various activities based around Sri Lankan culture. The children went on a tour around the compound of Nuga Gama, which has been set out in the style of a traditional rural village. The tour guide explained how various structures were made and what they were used for. Many of the children were reflective suggesting examples of where they have seen these or slightly similar structures before. He even took us to see their pet bull!
Nuga Gama also set up some Sri Lankan style games, including breaking clay pots and trying to touch the elephant’s eye whilst being blindfolded. They also participated in a bun on string eating competition where the children were not allowed to use their hands so had to think creatively in order to win the game. Some of the chefs demonstrated how to cook a few local dishes and the children listed off the instructions needed to make these. During all this excitement, we were met by a cultural dance performer who encouraged the children to join in with the dancing. The whole year group danced and giggled their way around the Banyan tree.
Finally, the children served themselves a feast of food prepared by Nuga Gama, including many different curries, rice, hoppers and rotties which were all full of flavour.
I was extremely impressed with the positive attitudes, engaged spirits and responsibility shown by every single child. They behaved impeccably and have represented The British School exceptionally well. A super and fun day had by all!
