Welcome to this edition of The Lion. As we look toward the rest of a busy Michaelmas Term. I do hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful break. Characteristically, many of our students were busy over the half term holiday representing the school at sporting fixtures or furthering their own experiences and developing skills in other extra-curricular activities.
Cricket
I must congratulate our Under 13 Cricketing Lions who steamed undefeated through the first round of the Under 13 Division 3 National Tournament with impressive victories over Thurston College and Vidaydeepa Vidaylaya, Pannipitiya. It is a tribute to our cricketers and their coaches that the British School Lions are a true force to be reckoned with at national level competition. Well done boys; we wish you continued success!
Attendance
We are all aware of the significant correlation between full attendance and academic and personal achievement. I congratulate the following Tutor Groups for the Highest Achievement throughout last half-term:
7A, 8A, 9A, 10A and 11D. We will be celebrating Sixth Form attendance in the weeks ahead.
I do hope that these Tutor Groups will inspire their peers to aim for Highest Attendance in the weeks ahead.
Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
I am also very proud of our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award participants who completed their first preparatory camp experience over half-term as they look toward the exciting Adventurous Journey component of their Bronze Award. I must thank Ms Nirasha and our team of D of E teachers who continue to support this wonderful programme.
House News
I must thank Ms Champika Amerasinghe for her support and contribution to the School’s outstanding House System as Head of Houses. As Ms Champika relinquishes this role, I am delighted to announce that Mr Fergus Whiteside will take over as Head of Houses immediately. Mr Fergus is passionate about the significance and importance of the House system at the British School and I know that you will join me in wishing him every success in his new role.
With this is mind, Mr Fergus and the Sports and PE team are busily making final arrangements for the ever-popular and much anticipated Inter-House Athletics Competition that takes place on Monday 12th November 2018 at Sugathadasa Stadium. Details of the arrangements for the day have already been sent out via the Parent Portal. I do hope that you will be able to come to support our wonderful athletes; it will be a pleasure to welcome you.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
