It is truly hard to believe how quickly our school year has passed and that this is the final edition of The Lion for this academic year. As we look back over three busy terms, it is wonderful to remember once again what a successful year it has been as the British School continues to set precedents of excellence in all areas of school life: academic; sporting; creative; competitive and in terms of community service and endeavour.
Our success continues due to the vision and support of our very special school community: parents, staff and our tireless students. I am grateful to you all for your constant support in the school’s many pursuits and for the collective vision to always move forward in our academic and extra-curricular successes.
Our year began, of course, with BSC students recognised for academic excellence, with 41 awards secured for excellence and high achievement at Cambridge IGCSE and A Level Examinations at the Cambridge Outstanding Learners Awards Ceremony.
It has been a year of ‘firsts’ and setting records for BSC students’ successes: Our Cricket Team holds a national record and they continue to dominate matches; this year saw special recognition for BSC students in the highly competitive debating arena at inter-school level and, of course, at the prestigious annual CoMUN Conference; our Choir added to its record of success at international Competition by securing Silver Medal placements at the World Choir Games Grand Prix Competition, held at Temple Trees; our students’ and teachers’ vision has seen our impressive portfolio of extra-curricular activities expanded with the inauguration of a range of new societies and our Senior School Production, Anything Goes, surely set the benchmark of excellence in the school’s already impressive cannon of outstanding public performance.
If one adds to this the numerous achievements of individuals who participate in an inspiring range of activities outside school and continue to garner accolades, it is not at all surprising that the British School in Colombo remains a vibrant and energetic learning community.
This week, of course, we paid special tribute to 59 wonderful individuals at the British School’s 24th annual Graduation Ceremony. Our ceremony marked the academic, sporting, competitive and House achievements of our Graduating Class of 2018. This is always a very special occasion for our graduating students, their parents and teachers. It was particularly special this year as we were honoured to welcome, as Chief Guest, BSC Alumnus, Mr Thilan Wickramasinghe, CEO and Co-Founder of Create Lab Singapore, who previously worked in international finance and investment. Thilan, a member of the Class of 1997, shared truly inspirational thoughts with our graduating class, that perfectly captured the mood and moment of our Graduation Ceremony, as our leavers look toward new challenges away from the British School. I must congratulate and thank every member of Year 13 and their parents for all they have done to support, shape and develop our school.
As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank you all, parents, staff and students, for your tireless vision and determination to make our school the best it can be. On this, I would also like to thank our PTA for their constant support of the Senior School’s many endeavours.
To students and families who leave us at the end of this year, I wish you every success and happiness in your new homes and schools. I do hope that whenever you are in Colombo you will come to visit us.
I wish you all a safe and happy summer holiday.
With my best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
