General Senior

Although this Summer Term has had some short weeks, we have been very busy in the Senior School!

We were able to begin the new term on a note of celebration and congratulation as Ms Christine and her team distributed prizes to our MFL Week competition winners! I must congratulate all of our deserving winners as well as thanking each and every linguist in the Senior School who helped to make the annual MFL Week such a success.

This week we celebrated Humanities Week, organised by the Geography and History Teams. Mr Tim Garlic treated us to a very thought-provoking assembly to launch this year’s Humanities Week, based on the theme People and Places, that wonderfully linked the humanities subjects. I must congratulate our very skilled photographers who submitted some outstanding photographs as part of the week’s photography display.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was a pleasure to welcome the Australian High Commissioner who visited to personally congratulate our winners of the Film Fly Australia competition that was launched in January. This was a national and international competition and it is particularly impressive that BSC students achieved two winning placements! Congratulations to our winners:

Steshni Corea and Raviya Careem who chose to make a video raising environmental awareness in relation to mangrove forests. Congratulations too, to Husein Esufally and Arundathi Ekanayake whose video focused on designing a home for citizens of the future.

As a result of their world class achievement, Steshni and Raviya will be travelling later this month with Ms Peshani to Macquarie University in Sydney, whilst Husein and Arundathi will be travelling in June with Ms Sonia to visit the University of South Australia in Adelaide. We are all very proud of you!

Wednesday afternoon also saw the International Universities Admissions Briefing for students in Year 12 and their parents. This is a significant part of the well-structured and supportive programme of university preparation that began back in August as soon as our students began Year 12. I remind parents and students that my team and I are always available should you have any questions or concerns about the next steps in to undergraduate study.

Our thoughts, of course are with our public examinations candidates whose IGCSE and A Level Examinations began in earnest this week. We wish our candidates every success at this important time. Again, I remind parents that Ms Savanthi, our Examinations Officer is available should you have any questions regarding your child’s IGCSE or A Level Examinations.

I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion!

With best wishes,

Simon Harwood
