A celebratory mood began our week this week as we were able to distribute the prizes, awards and certificates for individual and team successes that were part of this year’s annual Maths Week. Our winners should feel very proud of themselves for their achievements at some very challenging competitions. It was a lovely opportunity to welcome members of the Graduating Class of 2017 back to school to present their team award too in their final School Assembly before their graduation.

It was also wonderful to be able to celebrate the outstanding success of our Senior Debating Team, who did the school proud as they participated in the prestigious University of Colombo Faculty of Law Debates over the weekend. Our Debating Teams continue to go from strength-to-strength and I must thank Ms Mahum for her tireless support with our teams. Their success on the weekend against some very stiff competition was a wonderful way to end the year, particularly for members of our Graduating Class who were able to ‘bow out’ on such a note of success. Well done to you all!

On Monday, many of our students celebrated the end of the exam period in the Movie Afternoon, organised by Ms Jehan. I would like to thank all audience members for their very kind contributions to the Grassrooted Trust, the organisation that has been working with us to promote cyber safety.

Monday also saw the final parents meeting for our students who will be visiting the National University of Singapore for their annual Commerce Camp. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students who will experience undergraduate life at a world class university and have the experience of being taught by leading specialists. This experience is also always particularly useful for students who are preparing their applications to read commerce subjects at university as they are able to comment on their practical and academic experiences in the all-important Personal Statement. I must thank Ms Tharange and her team for coordinating this event again and I am most grateful to all parents who have supported this opportunity this year.

In a week that began on a note of celebration, the end of the week marked a very special moment for us all too, as we gathered as a school community for the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2017. Our leavers have contributed to the life of the British School is numerous ways and it was a wonderful occasion to mark their new beginning as they look toward taking their first steps away from BSC and enter the world’s finest universities. Congratulations and thank you Class of 2017! It has been a sincere pleasure working with you all.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of The Lion!

With my best wishes,

Simon Harwood

Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
