BSC Debating: The “Voice It!” Tournament Weekend
The BSC Debating Society has always been a source of pride and joy for our school. After a break of a year and a half, Team BSC got back into the swing of things with the “Voice It!” debating tournament hosted by Chokolaate, and held at the Hejaaz International School, Dehiwala.
Our team consisted of Imadh, Himayath, Sanhida and Dilari, and did so well to reach the second day of debates, and just missed out on the quarter-finals by a fraction of a margin!
They did so well to debate against tough teams such as Trinity College Kandy, and even beating very good teams like D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo.
With so many more tournaments coming up on the Debating Calendar, I am confident that our teams will go from strength to strength in the coming year, aided by the brilliant training sessions run by our Office Bearers Imadh, Himayath and Sanhida!

VICTORIOUS AT BSJ Jr MUN!
The BSC MUN Society has retained an exemplary legacy over the years with accolades and victories coming our way in each year that the school has been represented by stellar delegations.
This year has been no exception, as we start off MUN Season with our first (online) International Conference hosted by the British School in Jakarta!
Over the years, MUN has been open to only KS4 and KS5 students, where we train and prepare delegates for the world of public speaking and debate. The British School in Jakarta decided to take the initiative to host a Conference just for KS3 students and invite all FOBISIA affiliated schools to participate.
This gave the BSC Debating Society the opportunity to collaborate with the MUN Society, and we selected our delegates for this Junior MUN Conference from the Debating Society based on performances both during Society sessions and the recently concluded Inter-House Debates!
Our Delegates for this first-ever International KS3 Conference were Aleeza Salie, Amy Fernando, Arun Sumathiratne, Jannah Nuzraan, Jehan Fernando, Layla Jeffels, Praveen Athauda-arachchi, Sithuja Wijesekara, Yara Ricardo, and Yenali De Silva.
Once this selection process was completed, our MUN Society Office Bearers Imadh Mashoor, Himayath Nuzraan and Raveesha Fernando took the lead and facilitated training sessions over the course of two weeks where they shaped our Junior Delegates into being the most effective MUN Delegates they could be!
Needless to say, their training sessions worked wonders!
It's my absolute pleasure to report back amazing news from this extremely informative Conference which was held from the 26th-27th of November. Our KS3 MUN Delegates had a fantastic two days at their first-ever MUN Conference and were enriched in the ways of public speaking through this educational experience. MUN is also so great because it allows delegates to make new friends with people that they would not normally have had the opportunity to interact with! They made friends from students across the world at this FOBISIA organised virtual event, and hearing their feedback was so heartening when they came back to school!
To top it all off, we also had three awards won by Team BSC, and they were as follows:
- Aleeza Salie: Most Improved Delegate (UNHRC)
- Jannah Nuzraan: Most Improved Delegate (ECOSOC)
- Sithuja Wijesekara: Best Position Paper (ECOSOC)
The credit for it all must go to the delegates themselves and the MUN Society's brilliant Office Bearers, and I am absolutely thrilled that this flying start to MUN Season has set the tone for all the adventures to come! Team BSC will next be gearing up for FOBISIA MUN which will take place virtually next year during the third week of February, and then COMUN which will take place in March 2023!
Onwards and upwards: to greater heights we soar!
