As a part of their history lessons on WWII and its effects, Year 6 visited the Commonwealth War Graves in Jawatte, Colombo 5.
It was an event with mixed feelings for these students, as they visited the war graves of those who sacrificed their lives for their country. They walked about with utmost respect, making their observations on the tombstones of war heroes, in the calm and serene surroundings. Pupils discovered several tombstones which represented numerous nationalities. They were surprised at identifying the designations of these heroes and where they lost their lives. Teenagers as young as fifteen were also victims of war and this made many students surprised and emotional.
“I was really happy to see all the heroes who sacrificed their lives for their country. It was quite surprising to see such young people fighting for freedom. I was surprised to discover that Muslim tombstones were facing the direction they pray. As I left, I was wondering if all the war heroes were not afraid of losing their lives,” remarked Sethumi from Year 6A.
Upon their return, students produced a written reflection on their thoughts and emotions of this memorable visit to the Commonwealth War Graves.
In undertaking this visit, students were able to further their understanding and knowledge of World War II.
