In the Junior School we have enjoyed our UN day celebrations, Junior Choir and Showstoppers gave some amazing performances during assemblies for both key stage one and key stage two. Theekshana Nawinne, President of BSC Model United Nations and Head Girl, Secretary of BSC MUN, Prisha Satwani came to speak to key stage 2 to get all the children excited about UN Day and gave some interesting facts about the United Nations both past and present.
Junior School Head Girl, Ariyanna and Head Boy, Senal gave a speech at the assembly that I would like to share with you:
UN Day is the day we celebrate the creation of the United Nations.
UN Day is a day of celebration not just at BSC but across the globe. The first UN Day was celebrated on the 24th of October in 1948 and thereafter has been celebrated on this day every year. As fun as UN Day is for all of us the true reason United Nations Day is celebrated is to show what the nations have accomplished and help highlight the main things the UN will work on over the next year.
Greening the Blue is an initiative which was launched by the UN to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability throughout the UN and to encourage staff members to take an active role in reducing the organization’s carbon emissions which is the main contributor to climate change.
In school we have been working towards our aim of 'greening the purple'. This means that we are all working hard to make BSC more environmentally friendly.
Every student big and small have begun engaging and participating in this campaign by making simple changes within school such as using computers instead of note books in certain grades, sorting out our waste so that it could be easily recycled and encouraging car pooling, all with achieving the overall objective of transforming our school practices and operations in the interest of reducing carbon emissions.
Following in the foot steps of Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old climate and environmental activist who started the movement ‘Friday’s for Future’ we at BSC have also begun ‘No Waste Friday’s’, which is a program that encourages students to bring zero waste to school on Friday’s. Students are awarded points based on the waste they have brought or in this case not brought to school with special focus on their snack boxes and the winning classes, grade and house is announced at assembly the following Monday. This program has created such a hype and excitement in school and every week we see more and more students actively participating.
As Greta Thunberg said “no one is too small to make a difference”, so together let’s save our planet.
Wishing you all a fantastic half term.
