An inspirational start to the week for all of us was delivered by miss Claire McQuaid, during our weekly Assembly. In a presentation that explored the tools and mindset required to reach our aspirations, Ms Claire shared with us the personal journeys of well-known ‘high-achievers’ in all areas of life: the media, commerce; technology; sporting and science. We were reminded of the significance of the Cambridge Learner Attributes in our approach to daily challenges in our endeavors.
This was most significant as our school remains steadfast in its vision of everyone achieving the highest academic standards. At BSC, we also want our learners to aspire to and achieve the highest standards in all they do inside and outside the classroom, so it was most fitting that we were able to celebrate further successes at national level swimming as well as to mark the success of our Boys and Girls Football Teams who emerged champions in their respective TISSL Tournaments. Congratulations to you all!
In a week that started began with the significance of aspiration and achievement, it was wonderful to end our week with the end the week with the Senior School’s Annual Awards Ceremony at the prestigious Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Auditorium. It was an honour to welcome our Chief Guest, Professor Page Fortna. Professor Fortna, who received her PHD from Harvard University in 1998, is the Harold Brown Professor of US Foreign and Security Policy in the Political Science Department at world-renowned Columbia University in New York.
It was most appropriate that Professor Fortna, who is associated with some of the world’s leading academic institutions was able to grace our special occasion as we celebrated achievement and success for our friends and colleagues. There is a special link for us too, of course, as Professor Fortna, her husband and daughters joined the British School community this year in August, while in the same month, our former Head Prefect, Saanya Subasinghe, entered Columbia University as an undergraduate. It was also a pleasure to welcome the Directors of the British School in Colombo, Ms Fathimath Maniku, herself a BSC alumnus, and Mr Umar Maniku who graced our special occasion to share the many successes of our inspirational and aspirational learners.
I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion. Have a wonderful weekend.
With best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
