I must congratulate members of Key Stage Three who presented a wonderful assembly to begin our Senior School Week. The first part of the assembly reflected on the successful Key Stage Three Book Drive for this academic year. I am delighted that our students’ hard work and the generosity of our school community means that once again we were able to contribute to a school and an orphanage. Key Stage Three now look forward to beginning the next stage of this wonderful project and I wish them continued success.
It always makes me very proud when one reflects on the amount of help and support the BSC community extends to the local and national community. It is such generosity that typifies the British School.
Our Assembly ended with a thought provoking presentation on the importance of water conservation for the world as a whole. In a very well-made presentation, we, as a school community were made to think very carefully about how we take water for granted and vital action we should take to conserve this vital commodity. Well done Key Stage Three!
We were also able to celebrate the successes of our sporting Lions at the start of the week. Both our Boys and Girls Basketball Teams secured the Runners-Up position in the recent Inter International School Tournament organised by Wycherley International School. We were also able to congratulate Azquiya Usuph and Gavin Karunanayake for their success in national level swimming events. Indeed, Gavin Karunanayake made history by securing the Champion Swimmer title in the Men’s Open Round of the Pentathlon Championships 2018, organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union, for the third consecutive year! This is a wonderful achievement.
Last weekend, we bid ‘bon voyage’ to one team of our Film Fly Australia Competition winners. This was organised by the Australian Government and Austrade.
Steshni Corea and Raviya Careem in Year 12, along with Ms Peshani, visit Macquarie University in Sydney this week as part of their First Place Achievement for producing a video raising environmental awareness in relation to mangrove forests. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for our students, it is an outstanding achievement that BSC’s students are recognised for their skills and talents internationally.
Later this week, our other winning Year 12 team, Husein Esufally and Arundathi Ekanayake, whose video focused on designing a home for citizens of the future, visit to the University of South Australia in Adelaide as part of their First Place Achievement. They will be accompanied by Ms Sonia Jayasinghe.
It is a remarkable achievement that two of the winning teams are British School students and this is a true testament to their ability. We look forward to hearing about your adventures when you return! Congratulations once again to you all. We are very proud of you!
As I write, I know that arrangements for the much-anticipated Activity Days at the end of term are well underway. I remind any students who have not yet returned their Options Sheets for their chosen activities, they should do so immediately to avoid disappointment as space in all activities is limited.
I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion! Have a wonderful weekend.
With best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
