A literary flavour was much in evidence this week as we welcomed the annual Book Week activities organised by the English Department. We were treated to a range of workshops and activities based on the theme for this year, Let’s Go Sci-Fi, with a particular focus on the genre of Science Fiction. We were honoured to welcome reputed Sri Lankan writers who led a range of whole-school assemblies and creative workshops. Our guests included Mr Elmo Jayawardene, Mr Ashan Jayatilleke and Ms Thisuri Wanniarachchi, who is in fact a British School in Colombo alumnus, so it was a particular pleasure to welcome her back to school! As part of the annual Book Week, we welcomed stalls from reputed book shops who sold books to parents and students throughout the week to celebrate the joy of reading for pleasure. A series of quizzes and competitions took place throughout the week and included some outstandingly creative short stories, themed classrooms and a most memorable Science Fiction themed non-uniform day to end the week! I am extremely grateful to the English Department for making this year’s Book Week such a success.
We were also able to celebrate the appointment of our Deputy Head and Head Prefects at the start of the week. Our appointed Deputy Head Prefects, Gavin Karunanayake and Ana Nazim and our Head Prefects, Vidusha Chandrasena and Aditi Holey will lead our outstanding team of Prefects and we wish them every success in their roles.
The exam season began in earnest for Year 12 this week as they began their End of Year Examinations on Wednesday. This is an important period for Year 12 as they consolidate their learning from their first year of their respective A Level courses and look toward the challenges of Year 13. The End of Year Examinations for the rest of the Senior School will continue in the weeks ahead. I wish our Year 12 students every success at this important time.
I am delighted to report that the public examinations are passing smoothly for our IGCSE and A Level candidates. I am most grateful to our tireless Examinations Officer, Ms Savanthi, who ensures that our candidates are fully supported at this busy and important time.
I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion! Have a wonderful weekend.
With best wishes,
Simon Harwood
Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
