General Senior

A colourful, vibrant and informative Thai Pongal assembly welcomed us to the start of a new week in the Senior School. Drawing on the boundless creativity of members of all Key Stages, we celebrated and learned about this very important time in Sri Lanka’s cultural calendar.

It was a delight to walk into the Auditorium on Monday morning to be greeted with traditional Thai Pongal decorations such as banana leaves and a beautiful and intricate hand-made Kolam. Once again, we joined as a school to mark the traditions and customs of this festival in an and enlightening presentation that ended with a traditional dance. I believe that occasions such as this week’s Thai Pongal celebration demonstrates the true beauty of our school community: when students of all ages and of all backgrounds celebrate significant events as a family and where students of all ages and backgrounds contribute as readers, decorators, technical aides and performers as internationally minded individuals who are keenly culturally aware.

I must thank Ms Christina and Ms Shamele for their outstanding effort as well as all of our performers, their parents and the crew for a wonderful occasion.

As the Lent Term continues with its characteristic range of activities, I salute our Under 14 Boys Football Team who begin the Inter-International School Under 14 Boys Football Tournament this week. I am always impressed by the energy and ability of our young sportsmen and women who represent BSC with such pride, sportsmanship and skill! I wish you a successful tournament, boys!

With sport in mind, I must also congratulate our House Cricketers who have been busily practising for the Inter-House Cricket Competition that will be taking place on Saturday 27th January at Torrington Grounds. I do hope that many of you will be able to come along to support our players, in what promises to be another day of excellent Cricket. Our tireless PTA team have organised refreshment stalls to keep us all on top form as players and spectators for the day. I look forward to seeing you there!

As the term moves on, we look forward to the next academic year with the Year 9 IGCSE Options Fair on Wednesday 24th January, beginning in the Courtyard at 3.00pm. This is followed by the Sixth Form Information and A Level Options Fair on Wednesday 7thFebruary. These are important occasions as we aim to provide specific subject information to students and their parents. These fairs are part of a structured programme designed to inform, support and guide our learners in the choices they make for their future studies at IGCSE and A Level. My team and I look forward to seeing you at these events.

I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion.

Best wishes,

Simon Harwood
