General Senior

As the half-term progresses and we continue to focus of the Cambridge Learner Attribute, engaged, I congratulate to members of the Senior School who participated in the Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) on Saturday. I am delighted that, so many of our students are so very proactive in building on their classroom learning by participating in events such as this. I am very proud of our competitors and I am most grateful to Mr Jins and the Mathematics department for supporting yet another innovation to add to BSC’s portfolio of academic and extracurricular experience.

I must take this opportunity to thank member of Key Stage Three who held a very impressive bake sale at the end of last week. As the Senior School ate for charity, I must commend the generosity of our students in Year 7, 8 and 9 and their families for supporting this initiative. British School students have a long-standing commitment to and engagement with supporting the local and national community. This very successful bake sale raised a very impressive amount of money to support the annual Key Stage Three Book Drive. This year, Key Stage Three is supporting the Noguchi Orphanage in Kohuwela.

The examination season began this week for students in Year 10 and Year 12. This is a very busy and significant time as it allows students the opportunity to consolidate the learning that has taken place over the long Michaelmas Term. I wish our students in Year 10 and Year 12 a productive and successful examination period. With this notion of all students being firmly engaged with their academic learning and assessment, this week, students in Year 11 and Year 13 also received their timetables for January’s Mock Examination Session as they prepare for the IGCSE and A Level Examinations.

I once again applaud our Football Teams who have had a very busy week once again, participating in the Inter-International School’s Football Tournament organised by the Elizabeth Moir School. Staying with sporting endeavour and success, I congratulate our Under 15 Boys Basketball Squad, who secured 3rd place in the Inter International Tournament that ended on Monday afternoon. As our teams demonstrated their skills as dedicated and determined players as well as being outstanding ambassadors for the British School in Colombo.

We were also delighted to welcome our intrepid World Scholars back to school at the end of the week. A delegation of students participated in the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at the prestigious Yale University in the USA. They concluded a very successful tournament and I must congratulate each participant and their parents for supporting this opportunity. Well done to you all!

I am delighted to report that the international university admissions process is proceeding smoothly for our potential undergraduates in Year 13 and I am particularly grateful to Mr James and Ms Sonia Jayasinghe who ensure that all of our applicants receive personal attention and steadfast support throughout the process.

I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion and I wish you all a lovely weekend.

With best wishes,

Simon Harwood

Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
