General Senior

I must applaud members of the British School in Colombo’s Swimming Squad who had a very busy weekend representing their school at the 23rd Inter-International Schools’ Swimming Championships held at Sugathadasa Pool on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November. It is always such a pleasure to see our fearless young men and women work tirelessly and with real bravery and determination in support of their team and their School. I am delighted that there were very many personal successes over the course of the competition and I look forward to celebrating these successes as we present certificates and medals in a Senior School Assembly in the future. I must sincerely thank the many parents who were present to support our swimmers throughout the event.

I am always delighted to see our students innovate, and with innovation and determination firmly in mind, I must congratulate Roneth Perera and Akeel Vithirana of Year 10, who represented the British School in Colombo for the first time in the annual Inter-School Regatta held at Colombo Rowing Club last weekend. Not only was this a ground-breaking first BSC to be represented in rowing at this competition, I must congratulate Roneth and Akeel for also securing a Bronze Medal in the men's Under-16 Double Sculls category. We are very proud of you.

How fitting it is with the above in mind that the School is focusing in the weeks ahead of the Cambridge Learner Attribute, engaged, meaning that they are:Engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference. Cambridge students are alive with curiosity, embody a spirit of enquiry and want to dig more deeply. They are keen to learn new skills and are receptive to new ideas. They work well independently but also with others. They are equipped to participate constructively in society and the economy – locally, nationally and globally.’

How well this describes the BSC student! All of whom work tirelessly in a range of pursuits both inside and outside of the classroom and always willing to participate in a range of character and experience building experiences.

The weeks ahead see a very busy time in the sporting calendar, and I applaud our Football Teams who ‘kicked off’ their inter-international schools’ tournament on Tuesday. I wish them every success!

For the majority of the Senior School, the examination season approaches. By now, all students will have received their timetables and I encourage all students and parents to take this assessment period as a vitally important time for students to consolidate their learning over the long Michaelmas Term. I wish all of our students a successful examination period.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish members of the Senior School who flew off to the United States this week to participate in the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University. I am delighted that so many of our students have fearlessly resolved to participate in this competition and taken the opportunity to live and work in one of the world’s most prestigious university settings. I wish our BSC delegates the very best of luck and I thank them and their parents for making this experience possible.

I must congratulate all Senior School students and their families for supporting our improved attendance focus. There has been clear improvement over the Course of the Michaelmas Term. I am delighted to announce the Best Attendance to date:

In Year 8:             8D

I ask that all of our students aim to continue to build on this in the weeks and months ahead.

I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion!

With my best wishes,
